"I would like to apologise on behalf of Paul Douglass for the breakdown of communication and we will consider most of your ideas, where possible, into the parking scheme. Also, it would be best to discuss your ideas in more detail after the parking scheme is operating, after things have settled down. I will therefore incorporate your views into my report which is now deferred to the next Council Committee meeting on 10th December 1997.
"The CPZ covers about 13 km of road length and should provide 1300 car parking spaces, which works out to be 31% of the road space allocated to car parking. I think this is quite a modest proportion. Currently, as an estimate, 50% of road space is used by cars; therefore the CPZ considerably reduces car parking spaces for motorists in very highly populated area. Hackney is one of the London boroughs with the lowest car ownership level and we are trying to keep to this target by regulating traffic and by introducing more CPZs as requested in the parking guidance by central government. "I think the provision of contraflow cycle lanes in Fanshaw Street, Hoxton Street and Pitfield Street can be considered as a separate issue and could be referred to the Shoreditch Neighbourhood Committee following further discussion over the next few months. "I will ask Liam [Hackney's Cycling Officer] to arrange a meeting for us in the near future to discuss your requests in more detail." |
