'Cool' STA Bikes wins LCC youth award

STA Bikes, the cycling project based at Sir Thomas Abney primary school in Stoke Newington, has beaten all comers to win the Best Youth Cycling Project award in the London Cycling Campaign's annual awards.

Against stiff competition from projects all over the capital, STA Bikes impressed the judges for having made cycling "cool and aspirational" for children at the school.

Starting with the reception class of keen four-and-a-half-year olds, STA Bikes offers a progressive programme of cycle training across ability groups, rather than lumping all children together in year groups. This approach has proved so popular that STA Bikes-style projects have spread to numerous other Hackney primary schools through the 'Super Nova' federation.

Super Nova is a federation of Hackney schools cycle training projects inspired by STA Bikes, comprising eleven other primary schools which are joining or aspiring to join the scheme. Four of these schools recently won a combined £40,000 from the Department for Transport's Cycle Projects Fund, a success unparalleled anywhere in the country.

The LCC award follows STA Bikes' recent success in winning a £1000 runners-up prize in the Norwich Union national competition for projects that encourage children to get involved in sport.

STA Bikes cycle training is delivered by professional agencies including Cycle Training Ltd and the London School of Cycling. To pay for this, STA Bikes has received Neighbourhood Renewal Fund support via the Hackney Strategic Partnership. Councillor Vincent Stops, who chairs the Transport Sub-Partnership,said: "I was really pleased to be at the award ceremony with STA Bikes. This is a great project and I wish it continued success. We need to replicate it in all of our schools in Hackney."

Presented by Jenny Jones, the Deputy Mayor of London, the award was received by keen young cyclists Jasmine Pitt, Ben Pitt, and Bibsi Haywill, all graduates of the STA Bikes programme, at the London Cycling Campaign's recent annual general meeting.
