London Cyclist training article thumbnailAnyone 11 and over living, studying or working in Hackney is entitled to a FREE one-to-one cycling lesson with a professional trainer. Those under 16 years old must have a parent/carer with them. The lesson could also be a family lesson. Hackney is benefitting from generous funding from Transport for London to mount the most extensive cycle training programme the borough has yet seen. Administered by the non-profit STA Bikes Ltd and using the resources of Cycle Training UK, the London School of Cycling, the Bike Project and Pedal Power, the programme is delivering extensive training in many of the borough's schools while also providing free adult training.

Tim Evans writes about contemporary cycle training in the October/November 2005 issue of London Cyclist magazine. Read it in PDF format (785KB). Tim has set up a thriving cycle promotion project at Tyssen primary school and also holds the cycle training portfolio on the Hackney Cyclists committee.

STA Bikes

For several years we have been backing the excellent STA Bikes school-based training project in association with Cycle Training Ltd and the London School of Cycling. Read STA Bikes founder Sally Haywill's introduction to the project.

Looking back .... Cycle Active

During the summer and autumn of 2000, we sponsored and supported CycleActive, a project to encourage Hackney people to get physically active by learning to ride a bike - or to get comfortable with riding again. The training was mainly 'prescribed' through GP surgeries. The project usefully pioneered the health link and demonstrated the effectiveness of realistic cycle training.
