The old arms of the borough of Shoreditch, with the addition of Chris Hoy's bike

Thursday 15th
Cycling on the agenda at the Shoreditch Neighbourhood Committee
Hackney's four neighbourhood committees meet quarterly to discuss issues of interest to residents, and this quarter cycling is on the agenda for Shoreditch. A presentation will be given by a council officer responsible for issues surrounding cycling in the borough, and questions will be invited from members of the public. Often, when cycling is discussed at this type of event, the ever-green subjects of footway cycling and ignoring traffic signals dominate, but we live in hope of spreading a broader understanding of the issue, and this type of event does provides an opportunity to state our case. The more people supportive of cycling in attendance, the better.

It will also be an opportunity for us to raise issues of concern to the campaign within the Shoreditch area. For instance, we would like to know how long we have to wait before the council turn some of our key streets back to two-way working (at least for bikes), notably Hoxton Street (south) and Murray Grove, but also the lanes of south Shoreditch (Rivington Street etc). We'll also be asking to know more about the planned new cycle route north through the soon-to-be-redeveloped Haggerston West and Kingsland estates, and whether it will be continuous up to Dalston.

April 2009

Wednesday 1st
Monthly meeting special: meet the London mayor's cycling ambassador
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has appointed Andrew Boff to the new post of 'cycling ambassador'. As well as being a member of the Greater London Assembly, Andrew lives in Hackney and most definitely rides his bike (like everyone round here). This is your opportunity to ask Andrew about the mayor's plans to promote cycling in London -- such as the Vélib-style central London bike-share scheme starting next year -- and maybe also to grill him about some of the mayor's less popular measures, like allowing motorbikes in bus lanes and cutting funding for the London Cycle Network. All are very welcome to attend. We will serve soft drinks and some nibbles, and the Pub on the Park is just next door for a drink afterwards.
>> 7:30 to 9:30pm, at the Hothouse, 274 Richmond Road, London Fields, E8 3QW. Map.
(NB change from usual meeting venue)

Saturday 13th
(First day of Bike Week 2009 -- but then again, in Hackney every week is bike week)
Bike the Bounds of the borough
This annual ride is about 20 miles long in total and takes in very varied cityscapes, from the green beauty of the Lower Lea Valley to Old Street roundabout. We normally proceed at a very slow pace, and the ride is suitable for all. There are only a few busy sections, and it will be safe for children to come along. All are welcome! We ride anti-clockwise around the borough, finishing with drinks at the Princess of Wales pub at Lea Bridge. It normally takes around five hours, depending on the size of the group, and we do a few stops along the way.

Monthly mid-weeker
The first of a new series of monthly evening social rides. Route is flexible, but will end up at a location where changes to the streetscene are planned or needed.

This time our aim will be the junction of Albion Road, Albion Grove and Clissold Road, where we'll spend a short discussing plans and aspirations -- not too long, though, because it's not a summer night after all.

Following this, at around 9 pm, we will repair to the Alma just around the corner on Newington Green. You are very welcome to join us at the pub if you do not fancy the ride.

We are open to other themes (campaigning or otherwise) for these evening rides. Hope to see you there! Contact: Brenda and Ben (events co-ordinators) on 07958 525043

>>Ride departs 7:00 pm from the Town Hall, Mare Street, London E8
