PAST EVENTS IN 2003September 2003Sunday 21Shoreditch Carnival & Car Free Day Shoreditch's Car Free Day event is back, this time dubbed the Shoreditch Carnival and encompassing 19 of the 20 streets inside the Triangle. The motor-free streets and spaces will be opened up to stalls, street entertainment, and terrace-style eating and drinking outside restaurants, cafés, bars and pubs. There'll be three music areas, a children's area provided by Albion Kids Show and the Hackney Play Bus, and a test track to try out the latest city bikes, recumbents, electric assists and workbikes. July 2003Sunday 6LCC stall at Abney Park Open DayWe'll be there, dishing out free maps and Rough Guides to Cycling in London, chatting, giving advice, and, with a bit of luck, signing up a few more members for the London Cycling Campaign. You can get into the cemetery from Stoke Newington Church Street or through the main entrance at the bottom of Stamford Hill.
Saturday 12Dunwich DynamoThe 11th edition of the Dunwich Dynamo will be leaving London Fields, E8 around 21:00 - 21:30. DD is a touring-paced - less than 200km if you follow the proposed route - all-nighter to the Suffolk coast, entry is free. Thursday 5Remembering Nick HuttThere will be a gathering to remember Dr. Nick Hutt, a well-loved Hackney resident, doctor, cyclist and member of the London Cycling Campaign, who died last year. Nick's family, friends, colleagues and patients will be assembling at the Well Street Surgery (92b Well Street, Hackney, E9 7PX) to celebrate the opening of a nearby road crossing for which Nick campaigned, and to dedicate a tree and a bench.
You are invited for tea and cakes - if anyone would like to bring homemade cakes they would be very welcome!

Sunday 15Eastway Cycling DayA relaxed and sociable afternoon at East London's premier cycling facility, the Lea Valley Cycle Circuit, Eastway, London E9. The circuit consists of a mile-long motor-free road course, and there's also a BMX/MTB course. Events include: buddied rides for those who want to have a go, mountain bike rides, one-mile dash time trial, egg+spoon bike races, slow bike races, cycling-related seminar, Dr Bike, BBQ and local food stalls.
Tuesday 17The Hackney Sundown Cool Commute Wind-Down5.30pm onwards. We will have chilled drinks, chilled music and chill outs at the Lanes. The location will be next to the pavement cycle lane by the Robinson Crusoe Pub, on Green Lanes at the corner with Collins Rd. Thursday 19London Fields Cyclists' Breakfast8am - 10am. If your morning route takes you anywhere near London Fields, why not join us for fresh coffee and croissants in the morning sunshine? Friday 20Homerton University Hospital Cyclists' Breakfast8am - 9.30am. Hosted by the Homerton University Hospital Bicycle User Group in the hospital grounds. Come along on your bike and you'll be welcome whether or not you're a health service worker. BUG co-ordinator Brian Leveson will be organising 'buddy' rides for hospital employees who are new to cycling, and the breakfast will be their reward, he says. Streetmap location.
Saturday 21Bike The BoundsHere's your chance to ride all around the borough this Saturday. On the way, we will be passing through some of Hackney's lovely green spaces and negotiating some of its white elephants for motor traffic. The total length of the ride is about 20 miles. Plenty of positive stories along the way! We'll meet at 2pm in front of Hackney Town Hall, on the Town Hall steps, to move off in a counter-clockwise direction. Social afterwards, from about 6pm. Sunday 25Ride to Redbridge Green FairA leisurely ride to the Redbridge Green Fair, a small environmental festival. In keeping with the destination, we'll try to include as many green spaces as possible--Hackney Marshes, Walthamstow Marshes, Wanstead Flats, Wanstead Park, and the Valentine's Park in Ilford, the site of the festival. Return journey to Hackney to start around 5pm (when the festival closes) or earlier, depending on participants' wishes. There is the option of extending the ride, north into Essex, for instance, if participants wish. Later socialising not ruled out! This ride will be suitable for families with children, as main roads will be avoided. Distance no more than six miles each way. Meet 10am at Hackney Town Hall steps. Saturday 31Ride to Herne Hill VelodromeNo cars, no traffic lights, no potholes, no junctions, no motorbikes or pedestrians.....no brakes, no gears, no back-pedalling. Huge fun, a different sort of biking. This pro-trained session qualifies you to use the historic Herne Hill Velodrome, the home of track cycling. It takes most people, and children from eight years up, about 10 minutes to get the hang of it. Meet at 10am at Hackney Town Hall for a ride down to Cutty Sark Gardens for 11 (see below) to join Greenwich Cyclists for onward ride to Herne Hill. The track session will start at 1.30pm and will last for three hours (cost £10 waged / £5 unwaged, free to spectators).
