Update on the 'ring of steel' extension
Reason prevails in the City...eventually.

In the end, it was a victory for common sense - and for cyclists travelling around the City. Highway officers have bowed to pressure from Hackney cyclists, agreeing to allow two-way cycle movement within the extension of the 'Traffic and Environmental Zone', notably in Worship Street and Appold Street. This means that the 'ring of steel' extension will almost certainly live up to its promise of better conditions for cyclists.
Richard Harvey of the City engineers, speaking on November 5th, could not give any assurance to Cycling in Hackney about Spital Square, not only because of continuing uncertainty about the unpopular development proposals for Spitalfields, but also because he had not been able to make contact with the relevant Tower Hamlets officer for months! So, reason to celebrate, and to expect that future proposals should emerge from the drawing board cycle-friendly from the start. Wondering what we're on about? Gasp at the original proposals... |
